Every Thursday we spend the afternoon in Durham as Toby attends Houghall College and we pick him up on this day ( buses can be a nightmare sometimes and on this particular day don't get him home until after 7! He finishes at 4.30!) So we decided that every Thursday from now on we will pick Toby up, perfect excuse to spend the afternoons wandering around Durham.
This week we decided to check out The Story, a free to enter attraction bringing the history of Durham and it's people to you. It is quite a small "Museum" but it is absolutely packed with information and artefacts.
There are five collections in total
*Six miles and 900 years of History
*Archaeological Treasures from the ground below (Don't miss the impressive jug)
*300 years of DLI
*Local Studies
*Historic Registration
Elliot absolutely loved the maps. he spent ages messing about with them and finding peoples houses and the looking back in time to see what it would have been like in the 1800s. There are lots of interactive displays that you can get involved with including an interactive dress up screen, wooden puzzles and more. We also spent some time on the second floor messing with the interactive maps and making origami birds. (Elliot was way better at this than me!) All staff members we came across were lovely and welcoming and couldn't do enough to help. We didn't try the café on this visit as we had just polished off a large lunch but we will 100% be back to try it. Maybe during a Christmas shopping trip when we need a break from the busy of the city centre.
In the building you can also find impressive state of the art research facilities, a collections room for viewing items from the strong rooms, Café, small gift shop lots of space outside for a picnic and there's even space to get married here and register births. The centre also hosts events such as the monthly Fun for families which runs once a month (check out the website to keep up to date)
