The Hogs Head Inn is a gorgeous, modern country pub just of the A1 on the way in to Alnwick. The Inn is cleverly named after the Tavern in the Harry Potter Books and has previously won Silver in the North East England Tourism Awards. ( Well Done Guys )
It is situated right on the A1 and is perfect for exploring Alnwick and the surrounding areas. Offering 53 stylish family friendly En-suite rooms at a reasonable price, a carvery on a Sunday and is dog Friendly. It also offers plenty of parking which is always an added bonus.
The Pub also has a great play zone for under 12s which is great for letting them burn some energy before food or for burning those calories after food. Plenty of outdoor seats available or window seats so you can keep an eye on them whilst they play.
Food is served 7.30 am – 9pm and offers a great selection from the seasonal menu for adults and kids. Inside is very homely and decorated to high standard with plenty of seating, including booths and large tables to tables for two.
We arrived just before lunch time, you choose your own table and then go to the bar to order, which I prefer to table service.
What We Ordered
We had a good look at the menu and then decided on:
Craig and Adam both had the Chicken Tikka Masala – £11.95 They both said it was absolutely delicious and super filling, the portions were huge and came with Rice and a Chota Naan. The chicken was well cooked and the rice was cooked perfectly.
Me – Creamy Cajun Chicken Penne – £11.95 Wow! This was absolutely beautiful, really creamy. The penne was cooked perfectly and the Chicken was really tasty too. The portion was huge and I didn’t finish it. 🙁 It had a selection of stir fry veggies in too which were also yummy. I would highly recommend this dish
Elliot and Toby ordered from the childrens menu Elliot – Macaroni Cheese £5.95 + £1 for a dessert Elliot said it was really nice, which it must have been because, when it comes to food, if he doesn’t like it he will tell everyone for miles around that he doesn’t like it! Huge portion and Elliot didn’t finish it. (It looked more like an adult portion) Toby – Cheese Burger with Chips and Beans £5.95 + £1 for a dessert He really enjoyed the burger and said it was tasty. Toby always moans about getting a childs meal because he thinks they will be small. The kids portions here are NOT small.
Desserts
We ordered desserts when we placed the order, maybe if we had waited until after the food we might not have due to the large portions. However me did manage to squeeze in some cakes .
Toby and Elliot ordered the Chocolate Brownie from the kids menu for an extra £1. They both said it was delicious but would have been better with a scoop of ice cream.
Kids Chocolate Brownie
Adam had the sticky toffee pudding and it smelled so good. He ate the lot and wants to go back for more. £5.95 Craig choose the Banoffee pie. It looked amazing and he said it was really tasty and glad he ordered it. £6.95 (We know it was definitely freshly made, as there was some debate amongst the staff as to whether the bananas had been delivered)
Me! I ordered the Chocolate Fudge Cake. £6.95 It was nice, I prefer my chocolate cakes to be rich and I couldn’t really taste the fudge. My personal choice would have been a splash of cream instead of a scoop of ice cream. But it was still lovely and I still ate it.
We all had one round of Pepsi Max which was £3.50 each and came to a whopping £17.50! The slight overpricing on these being the only real negative for us.
The total cost of our out of the blue meal came to just under £100 which for the amount of food you got I thought it was ok value.
All in all it was a great meal, lovely pub with a homely friendly atmosphere and the staff were all pleasant and welcoming. We will absolutely be coming back again.
We were talking yesterday and I think we will try out the Carvery they also do a Breakfast with Santa which looks great so we may book that too!.
