Sunderland Christmas Lights Switch on and The Festival Of Light Details ~ 2019


Sunderland Christmas Lights Switch On 2019. Getting wrapped up each year to visit the Christmas light switch on is always on our calendar. A tradition we now do with our own children. I guess it’s a tradition, it kicks off the festive Christmas crazy shopping frenzy.

Visiting the markets, going to see the Panto at the theatre & grabbing some beautiful gifts from the stores in the Bridges are all part of our Christmas traditions in Sunderland.

Things have changed from the norm this year and will no longer feature lights in Roker Park. You can find out all about the changes below.

When will the Sunderland Christmas Lights be switched on?

The Christmas Lights will be switched on 21st of November 6pm and will run until 5th January.

Where will the switch on be hosted?

The Switch on launch in Keel Square SR1 3DZ

Who will be turning the lights on?

The wonderful Mayor of Sunderland Councillor David Snowdon will be pushing that button.

What other Entertainment will there be?

You can find performances from the fantastic local school choirs, Spark! Drummers and it will be hosted by the magnificent Sun Fm Team. There will also be a firework show to close the night. You can also keep cosy in Hadrian’s Tipi.

Keel Square Ice Rink

The Ice rink is back for everyone to enjoy. Prices are Adults £9 5-7 £7.50 4 & U £3 Family tickets are £25 for either 2 Adults & 2 Children or 1 Adult & 3 children. Skate aids are also available from £3 You can book your time slots HERE

What is Hadrian’s Tipi?

Hadrian’s Tipi is back again. You can find a cosy log fire, seating areas, hot & cold drinks complete with an outdoor beer garden with live music.

Shopping

You can also visit the fantastic selection of shops in and outside of the Bridges to find that special gift for loved ones. What’s even better, most shops are open late!

Council owned Car Parks are free to use after 3pm,

The Festival Of Light

Usually we would all go down to Roker park and see the fantastic light displays but this year there’s a new location.

When and where is the Festival of Light?

Thursday 21st November is the launch day until 22nd December In Mowbray Park (SR1 1PP)

Whats on at the Festival of Light

You can find an array of entertainment for the whole family, including street theatre characters, amazing lights, music, Santa’s Reindeer & Workshops. Not forgetting the fantastic Playpark located at the top of the park. Shows include: 21st Nov – 24th Nov Snow Queen & Superheroes save christmas 5th Dec – 8th Dec Elf Checklist Training 19th Dec – 22nd Dec Storytime with Santa

The Museum and winter gardens gift shop will also be open until 9pm each night (They have some fab gifts)

How much does it cost and Opening times

Entry Costs just £3 per person with under 2s going free. Online discounts are available. First entry is 4pm with last admission being 8pm with the event closing at 9pm Get your tickets HERE

Toilets will be available, dogs are allowed on leads and it is accessible to all. Please note bicycles are not permitted due to the high number of visitors. Food & drink will be available, although you can also bring your own. NO ALCOHOL is permitted.
